Embracing the seasons of your career

Imagine your career as a journey through the seasons, each with its unique lessons and growth opportunities. Just like the rhythm of nature, change is the only constant in life and our professional paths. It’s within these shifting seasons that we can find opportunities to learn, evolve, and thrive.

Discovering your career seasons

Picture this: your career journey as a garden.

In the seed season, you lay the foundation, planting the seeds of your vision. Much like a gardener tending to the soil, light, and warmth, you create the right conditions for your professional growth. This might look like mapping out your vision and investing in learning via a course or bootcamp. Consistency is your friend, even when progress might not be immediately visible.

Nurturing Growth

As the season progresses, you witness your seeds turning into seedlings. Growth accelerates, roots deepen, and the promise of fruit is in the air. This parallels your career, as you focus on executing plans, honing your skills, and exploring different paths. You might diversify your skills and roles like a plant branching out to explore new spaces.

My personal journey included transitioning into roles like Product Design and Product Management as well as exploring different industries along the way.

The Bloom of Fulfillment

Enter the flowering season, a phase where growth slows and energy turns into producing fruits and seeds. In this career stage, you embrace a holistic approach, valuing flexibility and connections with loved ones. Your focus might shift from the grind to a more balanced life. You may give back to those earlier in their careers through mentorship or teaching.

After starting research teams from scratch 2x before, this is the stage where I am personally. I want more rest and ease. I want to be both a student and a teacher. I no longer want my life to revolve strictly around work.

Seasons of Transformation

As you continue, regeneration begins. You harvest your previous experiences and envision new possibilities. Transitions might include changing companies, and industries, or even launching your own business.

Navigating your unique path

Every season comes with experiences, benefits, and insights. While some seasons may span years, others might be a few months. Transitions often occur because something feels off. What mattered to you before no longer resonates with you. To help you on your journey, consider these guiding questions:

  • Energy Focus: What energy do you want to focus on for the next phase?

  • Skills Growth: What skills do you want to continue to grow?

  • Life Beyond Work: How do you want to spend time outside work?
