On transitions

Transitions are really hard.

As I sit here, a few days into Autumn, I can’t help but notice the crispness in the air and colors of the changing leaves. Fall happens to be my favorite season, but this year, the transition feels like a sudden jolt to the system.

Transitions are the messy middle ground between what was and whats to come. Right now, I find myself in the middle of two significant transitions:

  1. I’m in the final week of my intensive 6 month coaching certification program

  2. I just sealed the deal on a new full time role set to kick off in November (stay tuned for more details!)

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really excited for what’s in store for me, but there’s also a bit of sadness to leave this period of my life behind. Below are some techniques I’ve been using as my guiding lights:

What are you grateful for?

Gratitude is the warm feeling of thankfulness for the wonderful aspects of your life. It’s about pausing to reflect on the positives, whether it’s the support of loved ones, simple pleasures of life, or memorable experiences.

For me, I’m really deeply thankful for the flexibility I’ve had in my schedule during this period. It allowed me to focus on things that bring me joy. From early morning pilates classes to tending to the garden and working with incredible coaching clients. This is a time that I’ll always cherish.

What do you want to leave behind?

Transitions often signal the closing of one chapter and the opening of another. To truly move forward, we must confront and put to rest the baggage we may be carrying from our past.

In my case, I’ve been actively working on leaving behind the weight of anxiety tired to others’ expectations. While spring and summer was really fun, I struggled with fear of how my choices were being perceived by others. When I was finally able to let this go and focus on what feels right for me, I felt so much ease and expansion for myself.

What do you want to carry forward?

Transitions can also mark a fresh start — a change to revisit what you want to take with you as you move onto the next leg of your journey.

For me, I’d like to carry forward the rituals of writing and self-care that have nurtured my soul. I intend to honor the white space I’ve carved out for myself, a space for reflection, creativity, and simply being. These practices have breathed new life into my journey and I’m committed to embedding them into my calendar as sustained acts of self-love.

On Transitions

Transitions, no doubt, are challenging. Whether you’re guiding them or they are being driven by external forces, be it a move, career shift, change in your personal life, the road can be bumpy.

Yet, transitions are a natural part of life and leadership. Rather than suppressing your emotions, take a moment to acknowledge how you feel during this time. Remember that all transitions are momentary.
